Jazz fans were treated Friday evening to spellbinding performances with headliners, the Tadashi Thomas Quartet from New York and the tremendous opening Nā Aliʻi Big Band, comprising students from King Kekaulike High School, conducted by Casey Nagata. Pictured the 17-piece band with vocalist Lannie Hisashima on the standard "I Won't Dance." Nā Aliʻi's repertoire ranged from John Coltrane's classic "Giant Steps" to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's "Mr. Pinstripe Suit" with Vincent Gusman on vocals. Jazz Maui's executive director Bryant Neal praised the school's music program for "developing such young talent." They will perform on July 4 at the Queen Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center along with the KKHS Alumni Band and the Chop Suey Jazz Orchestra, with music starting at 2 p.m.
