WAILUKU – Keith Tanitomi (61) of Kihei, was arrested for Negligent Homicide in the First Degree, Collisions Involving Death, Reckless Driving, and Operating a Motor Vehicle After License Suspended/ Revoked for OVUII on Friday after a hit and run cost Irene Kauffold (64) of Kihei her life on Friday at 1881 South Kihei Road.
MPD preliminary investigation revealed that, "the unknown vehicle involved in the collision to be a grey 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee.On Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, at approximately 5:08 p.m., Keith Tanitomi (61) of Kihei, was arrested for Negligent Homicide in the First Degree, Collisions Involving Death, Reckless Driving, and Operating a Motor Vehicle After License Suspended/ Revoked for OVUII. In addition, he was placed under arrest for four unrelated outstanding warrants."
According to court records, Tanitomi was released for a $250 bail on Feb. 28, 2024, for criminal contempt of court disobey or resist court mandate. On March 21, 2024, that cash bail was forfeited for failing to appear at a court ordered continued arraignment. A warrant was issued for Tantinomi's arrest on March 21.
On January of 2024, Tanitomi was arrested for driving without a license and insurance. In addition, Tanitomi was cited on Jan. 29, 2024, for driving without a current safety check and delinquent vehicle registration. Tanitomi was ordered to appear on March 5, 2024, for an arraignment and plea hearing. He was not present at the hearing and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
According to court records, Tanitomi paid his fine of $140 on March 18 for the two infractions of driving without a current safety check and delinquent vehicle registration.
In total, Tanitomi was cited for 34 total traffic violations in Maui from 1996 to 2024.
