The photo of the week comes to us via Renee Gilsdorf and it's titled 'Maui at a crossroads'. Send your best photos from Maui County to rcollins@mauinews.com for a chance to have your photo featured on the front page of our Thursday print edition and our six day a week digital edition. In her submission Gilsdorf wrote in her submission:

Aloha,

I just saw Art Filizar’s photo of Lahainaluna vs. Molokai on Facebook and saw your email address to submit pictures to. I took a lot of pictures of this rainbow by the old pineapple fields across Honoapiilani Hwy from Supermarket Times, just north of the lower road. This one really made a statement to me.

Maui is at such a crossroads right now and tensions are running high. I see this rainbow doing its job, bringing joy, beauty, and rain to the lands. But I positioned it going into a discarded shopping cart… I see the cart as a symbol of all the homeless, cars, trash, cats, anxieties, strains, long hours, sadness, anger, apprehensions, grief, hostilities… all of it. Things are heavy. I also see a lot of good that people are doing for each other and our community, and can only hope it’s going to be enough to ‘fill up the discarded shopping cart’.

I am the librarian at King Kamehameha III Elementary and have been on the receiving end of a lot of good. People have donated furniture, books, and volunteered time to help us set up the new library. We have received donations and well wishes from all over the states, as I know so many families and community businesses have. Everywhere, there is so much to do it is overwhelming, but one good act, one rainbow, at a time will make, and has made, such a difference.

Thanks,

Renee Gilsdorf
