Maui residents have until the end of the day Thursday to submit feedback regarding Community Development Block Grants.
Led by the County of Maui's Community Development Block Grant Program Office, the online survey focuses on grant priorities and needs the public's input to help drive grant-funded projects and activities over the next five years.
By participating, Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi residents will help shape CDBG funding in the 2025-29 Consolidated Plan.
The Consolidated Plan, or ConPlan, identifies community needs and provides a five-year strategy for how CDBG grants will be used to develop community resources that meet those needs.
Patience Kahula, County of Maui CDBG Program Manager, said the purpose of the plan is to ensure that jurisdictions receiving federal assistance adequately direct and plan for community development and housing for low- and moderate-income families in a way that improves the availability and affordability of decent, safe and sanitary housing in a suitable living environment.
"The ConPlan is a five-year strategic plan that addresses the county's community development, housing needs and funding priorities. The 2025-2029 ConPlan is being developed with community input through public hearings, community organizations and government agencies, and by public survey and studies," she said.
She added: "The County of Maui encourages all residents to participate in the development of the County's Consolidated Plan to ensure that program resources are invested in ways that best meet the community’s needs."
Effective since Jan. 1, 1974, the Community Development Block Grant Program is one of the oldest programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is the Federal Government's primary program for promoting community revitalization throughout the country.
The primary objective of the CDBG Program is the development of viable communities by promoting integrated approaches that provide decent housing, a suitable living environment and expand economic opportunities, principally for persons of low- and moderate-income.
Kahula said CDBG funds are granted, on a formula basis, to the County of Maui to assist the county in addressing high-priority housing and community development needs to primarily benefit low- and moderate-income persons as identified by the community and reflected in the county’s 5-year ConPlan.
The County of Maui has participated in the CDBG Program since its inception and received its first allocation in 1975.
