WAILUKU–As part of its ongoing commitment to being directly involved in community efforts to revitalize Lāhaina and also to grow Maui’s housing supply and workforce, UH Maui College has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Maui to offer a free, five-day, in-person training in the basics of building construction.

“On August 9, 2023, our college pledged to be part of the wildfire recovery efforts for as long as it takes. This training partnership with Habitat of Humanity Maui is part of the continuation of that commitment. I am humbled and filled with gratitude every day by the efforts of our UHMC ‘ohana,” Chancellor Lui Hokoana said.

The course is designed specifically for community members interested in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Maui to build affordable housing for the local community, most notably in Lāhaina. Students will learn the basics of building–carpentry, electrical, and plumbing–and prepare them to build alongside Habitat Maui with confidence.

“As we continue our disaster recovery efforts in Lāhaina, it’s clear that rebuilding is not just about restoring homes, but also about strengthening our community,” Habitat for Humanity Maui Disaster Recovery Coordinator Sarah “Streanor” Treanor said. “The training course at UHMC will equip volunteers with the essential skills to help reconstruct homes, ensuring that we not only rebuild but also create affordable housing solutions across Maui. This partnership allows more people to contribute directly to our mission and make a lasting impact in the lives of those who need it most.”

Class size limited to 15 participants. Priority will be given to those who intend to volunteer with Habitat Maui.

The course takes place from Monday, Oct. 21 through Friday, Oct. 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day at the Carpentry Building on the UH Maui College campus.
