Nonprofit aims to uplift Lahaina Filipino community spirits
The Lahaina-led nonprofit organization Kaibigan ng Lahaina will host Lahaina Palengke Night at Princess Nahi’ena’ena Elementary School featuring Lahaina businesses and community fellowship from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 2.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking will also be free but limited.
According to event organizers, Lahaina Palengke Night will be the first public event held by Kaibigan ng Lahaina — also known as KnL — a newly established nonprofit.
The purpose of the event is to uplift the spirit of the Lahaina Filipino community, and “Palengke” refers to the public, open-air markets often found in the Philippines.
The event will feature fresh produce, Filipino entrepreneurs, Lahaina gear and food vendors, as many are familiar Filipino-owned businesses that suffered great losses in the wildfires.
“Cooking for the people of Lahaina and especially the Filipino community brings so much joy for us. We get to serve our community and see familiar faces. We are so thankful for the chance to participate in this Palengke Night,” said Roger Navarro, owner of RVN Deli. “Thank you to Kaibigan ng Lahaina for reaching out to us and supporting us as we rebuild.”
Because parking will be limited, attendees are encouraged to carpool or walk to Princess Nahi’ena’ena Elementary School. A resource fair will also be featured at the event, with representatives from key organizations that seek to aid the Lahaina Filipino community.
“For RVN Deli, Smash Maui and West Side Boba, this is a formal and long overdue homecoming,” said Ryan Corpuz, the event chairperson and a board member for the organization.
