An earthquake took place close to East Maui at 8:44 p.m. Thursday.
"I felt a quick boom and shake," Haiku Hill resident Rodney Kilborn said. "I never heard that cracking sound in a long time."
At a magnitude of 3.7, the earthquake occurred in the ocean about 1.2 miles east of Hana at a depth of 6.2 miles below sea level, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
"Earthquakes in this region are not common but have occurred occasionally," officials at the observatory said. "These earthquakes are caused by bending of the crust beneath the islands."
Residents from Hana to Kula and as far as Molokai and Hawai'i island said they felt it.
The observatory is warning people there could be aftershocks in the coming days and weeks.
