Play was suspended at the Waiehu Golf Course on Saturday not because of the weather but because of the discovery of what appears to be an unexploded grenade.

Police responded at 2:42 p.m. and the Hawaii Inter-Island Bomb Squad unit from Maui arrived to assess the potential unexploded ordnance.

Authorities discovered the grenade had an open bottom and was hollowed inside. Additionally, the grenade spoon and safety pin were not connected to the fuse, and there were no explosives within the fuse, police said.

Play resumed at the golf course with no injuries reported.

Police said the unexploded ordnance was recovered and submitted for safekeeping.

Police are asking the public to refrain from handling unexploded ordnance and to contact the department for assistance upon its discovery.

Maui served as a site for training troops during World War II, and unexploded ordnances do surface periodically.

In 2023, the Hawaii Inter-Island Bomb Squad was called to dispose of what appeared to be an old mortar at a Kihei recycling center. The company recycled concrete, rock, dirt, concrete and asphalt dropped off by the public.
