While a fireworks explosion killed three women and left more than 20 people injured in Honolulu, there were no fire-related injuries reported on Maui from 6 p.m. New Year's Eve to 6 a.m. New Year's Day, according to local officials.
Still, fireworks-related calls kept local firefighters busy as the Maui Fire Department responded to 22 fires throughout the county.
Most of the calls did not include any injuries, but one person suffered a fireworks-related eye injury that required hospital attention.
Maui Fire spokesperson Chris Stankis said the vast majority of the calls were small brush fires that were less than 10 square feet in size, as well as rubbish or dumpster fires, but all were quickly extinguished.
