Plans are moving forward to salvage two vessels that ran aground on Maui’s shores during a severe storm, including the former Lahaina-based fishing vessel Hinatea, which was beached at Charley Young Beach in Kihei.
Coast Guard spokesperson Corinne Zilnicki said the owner of the Hinatea was at Charley Young Beach removing things from the vessel and working on a salvage plan.
Zilnicki said there was no sheen in the water to indicate a leak, and the batteries and fuel had been removed from the vessel to reduce environmental risks.
Sometime during the storm Thursday night to early Friday morning, the touring Hula Girl ran aground in Honolulu Bay in West Maui while trying to seek shelter from inclement weather, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard said the state Department of Land and Natural Resources is taking the lead in the removal and salvage of the two vessels.
