King Kekaulike softball focuses on unity, growth
As the King Kekaulike High School softball team enters the spring season, their vision is clear: to build a culture of constant growth and improvement.
Head Coach Kylie Asher shared her perspective on what drives her leadership approach and what she is emphasizing to the team as they work toward these goals. Under her guidance, the focus is on creating a strong, unified team that grows together both on and off the field.
“I focus on three main things,” Asher said. “Fundamentals, having a solid foundation of skills, we work on small fundamental things every day. Mental toughness, we are really trying to develop our players’ focus, resilience and composure under pressure. Communication, clear and effective communication on and off the field is another thing we are trying to instill in our players this year.”
As the team emphasizes a positive and supportive culture, this past offseason was dedicated to strengthening their bond and becoming even more united as one.
“So far, within this season that excites me is our players’ work ethic, their growth and the positive team dynamic,” Asher said. “I am honestly just extremely proud of our girls, my coaching staff and the families involved that help keep our team flowing.”
As softball grows at the college level with rising attendance, viewership and the introduction of new professional leagues across the U.S., female athletes are gaining a platform to reach their goals, pursue their passion, inspire others with the same drive and ultimately compete at the highest level.
“I believe there are so many valuable life skills you can learn from sports in general, but softball specifically can teach you how to overcome adversity, learn to handle setbacks, dust yourself off and keep pushing,” Asher said.
Female sports can also bring a unique level of individuality to the athlete and the future of sports. Sports can teach athletes not only how to survive, but to thrive under pressure, work together as a team and lead while inspiring others.
While King Kekaulike softball continues to take the field this season, the coach said the players are gaining valuable tools for success both on and off the field, and for that, they are grateful.
