Maui police have upgraded the charge against a Kahului man to first-degree murder in the death of a 43-year-old woman also from Kahului.
According to police, as of Friday, the case is being investigated as a first-degree murder. The 41-year-old Kahului man arrested in connection to the death of JanineKara Sturgeon remains in police custody without bail.
According to information previously released by Maui police, at approximately 11:03 a.m. Wednesday, dispatchers received a call from an individual who works in an office telling them a former client had come into the office saying he had killed someone.
Police said that, after receiving the call, they checked on the man's residence at 111 Kahului Beach Road and found Sturgeon's lifeless body. Police said no life-saving measures were performed because officers determined she was deceased.
At about 2:35 p.m., after conducting a brief search, police found the man in Ho’aloha Park in Kahului, where he was arrested on a second-degree murder charge.
Police said the man was taken to the Wailuku Police Station without incident. The investigation is ongoing.
