Seabury Hall boys basketball coach Scott Prather remembers when Bromo Dorn was a freshman playing in a preseason game against Maui High, and he hit a 3-pointer off the backboard at the buzzer to win the game for the Spartans.
Looking back, Prather said he thinks that moment set the tone for Dorn’s high school career, as the Spartans senior has shown great composure and reliability en route to becoming the 2024-25 Gatorade Hawaii Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
“When I found out, I was elated and overjoyed for him — just super excited that he’s getting the accolades and recognition that he deserves,” Prather said. “This is something he deserves. He puts in the work, and I’m just glad other people are seeing what I’ve seen for the last four years.”
Gatorade is in its 40th year of honoring the nation’s most elite high school athletes for their success on the court, in the classroom and in the community, and Dorn is the first Gatorade Hawaii Boys Basketball Player of the Year from Maui.
According to a news release from Gatorade, the award distinguishes Dorn as Hawaii’s best high school boys basketball player, and with the honor, he joins an elite group that includes NBA stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Jayson Tatum and Duke’s Cooper Flagg.
At 6-foot-6, 185 pounds, Dorn led the Spartans to a 29-4 record and the Division II state championship. Along the way, he averaged 27.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.1 assists per game while making 81 3-pointers.
“He’s been the best player in Division II for the last two years,” Prather said. “That growth and that maturity, it’s just fantastic to see and it’s all because of his hard work.”
Dorn was named the 2024-25 MaxPreps Hawaii Player of the Year, and the senior guard scored 40 points or more in three games. He was also named the state Division II tournament’s most outstanding player and is a two-time First Team All-State selection.
“It sounds crazy to say, because he averaged 27 points a game, but Dorn is not just a scorer,” said Robbie Shklov, coach at Mid-Pacific High School, in the release. “He tries to get all his teammates involved. And that’s even with Division II teams throwing three or four guys at him.”
Dorn has maintained a 3.79 weighted grade-point average. The awards program also noted how he has volunteered locally as a youth basketball coach and instructor.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes one athlete in each state and Washington, D.C., for football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball and boys and girls track and field, and one National Player of the Year is selected in each sport.
The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee.
Every Player of the Year receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner. To date, the Gatorade Player of the Year program reports to have provided more than $5.6 million in grants to winners across more than 2,000 organizations.
