Maui police are investigating the county's seventh and eighth vehicle-related fatalities of 2025 after a 1-year-old boy and 43-year-old man died in two separate incidents on Thursday.
According to police, at approximately 9:42 p.m. Thursday, the driver of a 2016 Nissan Altima was pulling into the driveway of a home on Poheoheo Street in Kahului when the car struck a 1-year-old boy from Makawao who was on the sidewalk in front of the residence.
Police reported the boy sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Nissan was not hurt.
In a separate incident Thursday, a 43-year-old man from Kahului died in a wreck earlier in the day on the Honoapi'ilani Highway in Waikapu.
According to police, the man was driving a 1988 Toyota pickup when he came upon a 2022 Ford Explorer stopped on the highway waiting to make a left turn on a farm road about half a mile north of Alohi Ui Street.
The pickup struck the Explorer from behind just after 4 p.m. The man suffered critical injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police are withholding the man's name to allow his family an opportunity to notify extended family and friends.
A 67-year-old woman from Spreckelsville and a 9-year-old boy in the Explorer were not hurt.
According to police, the involvement of alcohol, speed and drugs is pending as the investigation is ongoing.
The two traffic fatalities were Maui County's seventh and eight of 2025 as compared to four at the same time last year.
