If you’ve been considering adopting a dog or cat or thinking about providing foster care for one, now’s a good time to do it, especially if it’s a dog, according to the Maui Humane Society.
In one day last week, 21 dogs were added to the list of animals entering Maui Humane Society, and that has left the organization tight on space.
“That’s a lot in one day,” Maui Humane Society spokesperson Victoria Ivankic said. “We have zero kennel availability, so we have to get creative.”
For Maui Humane Society, part of being creative is appealing to the public and suggesting people take a look at the many dogs available at MauiHumaneSociety.org.
As of Tuesday, one of the pups featured on the website — a 3-year-old, mixed-breed female named “Cowie” — had been with Maui Humane Society for 564 days, longer than any other animal at the shelter.
While the long-term goal is always adoption, Maui Humane Society offers a foster-care program where individuals can provide foster care for an animal for as little as a week or longer.
In a foster-care situation, the individual receives food and a kennel carrier, as well as necessary veterinary care, from the Humane Society.
“It’s kind of like baby-sitting,” Ivankic said, while adding that the animals have all had their preventative shots and been treated for fleas and ticks and have a microship that identifies them. The organization also offers behavioral training when available.
“We’re really trying to get them set up as much as possible for the adopter,” Ivankic said.
According to the nonprofit, Maui Humane Society houses about 4,900 animals a year.
