UPDATED: MPD veteran accused of sexual assault identified

On Thursday, Devin A. Schoeppner, an 11-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, was arrested on sexual assault accusations.

The Maui Police Department announced the arrest in a Thursday news release. The department identified the individual arrested as a 48-year-old man from Kahului. On Friday, a department spokesperson confirmed the name of the officer arrested.

The news release said the officer has been placed on administrative leave, and his department-issued credentials and firearm have been temporarily removed pending the outcome of the investigation.

“Any Maui Police Department employee who violates the law will be held accountable — both criminally and administratively,” Chief of Police John Pelletier said in the release. “As chief, I stand firmly behind the dedicated men and women — both sworn and civilian — who serve our community with integrity and commitment.”

Pelletier continued by saying the department holds its officers to the highest standards of accountability and transparency, and when they fall short, the department must address those failures with impartiality and integrity.

“Our community deserves accountability,” Pelletier said. “We are taking deliberate steps to reinforce our commitment to fair and equitable law enforcement practices, ensuring that every individual’s rights are upheld.”

The release said the investigation is ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.
