Habitat for Humanity Maui celebrated the dedication of two homes on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands lots in Kula earlier this year.

The nonprofit group worked as a partner with Native Hawaiians who contributed hundreds of hours toward the construction of their homes and participated in homeownership education to prepare for homeownership.

“It has been a dream of ours to own a home and the wonderful people of Habitat for Humanity Maui have helped that dream come true,” said Janae Moskwa, one of Habitat Maui’s newest homeowners. “We are forever grateful for this opportunity. Not only have we gained a home, but we’ve also gained new family and friends along the way.”

One home was for a retired educator who has spent her life serving the local community.

The second home was presented to the Moskwa family, who have a special connection with their new neighbor, the retired teacher, who taught one of the family members in grade school many years ago.

The dedication ceremonies attended by Habitat staff, volunteers and community partners included traditional Hawaiian blessings and heartfelt words from the families.

Habitat for Humanity Maui is continuing to work with Native Hawaiian families, with more homes planned in Kula and the upcoming Pu’uhona Subdivision.

Habitat also builds and repairs homes for low-income families at a zero-interest, no-profit basis.

According to Habitat, it serves families that earn between 25% and 80% of the Maui County median income.
