Ride of Silence on May 24 to promote road safety

The Maui Bicycling League will host the annual Ride of Silence on May 24 in honor of the cyclists and pedestrians killed or injured on public roadways.
The free event encourages drivers to be more mindful and respectful of more vulnerable road users. The Ride of Silence is held annually in more than 400 cities around the world and brings together riders in a call for awareness, remembrance and safer streets.
On Maui, the Ride of Silence will begin at 8:45 a.m. May 24 at the Maui Veterans Highway Bike Path, and will proceed from Kīhei to Kahului and back, totaling approximately 13.7 miles. Participants are asked to wear white, ride silently with their heads down and wear helmets.
"We ride for those we’ve lost and for those who still walk, ride, and roll on our streets each day," said Saman Dias, chair of the Maui Bicycling League. "This event is about visibility, remembrance, and calling for change on Maui's roads."
As of May 13, Hawaiʻi has experienced 53 traffic fatalities statewide -- an increase of 51% over the same time last year, according to the Maui Bicycling League.
After the ride, participants are invited to stay and talk story over complimentary refreshments provided by Robin Hagen in loving memory of her husband, Karl Hagen, who was killed while cycling.
