Founded in 2009 to promote a fun introduction to the sport of running, the Healthy Kids Running Series is an event that fosters self confidence and builds self-esteem as it encourages children to “Get up and Go” all around the United States.

Through the cross-country event, participants ages 2-14 sign up for a five-week program that is twice per year.

This season on Maui kicked off May 4 at Pomaika’i Elementary School with over 100 kids ready to run. Other event dates are set for 4 p.m. May 18, June 1, June 8 and June 15. For more, go to HealthyKidsRunningSeries.org/race-locations/maui-hi/ .

“The kids are our future and healthy kids make for a healthy future,” said Ikaika Maldonado of Pacific Eden Construction, a sponsor of this year’s event.

This year’s race is sponsored by Pacific Eden Construction, Raising Cane’s and Just Keiki Pediatric Dentistry, and Magician George, Soft Ink Airbrush and Friends and Faire also joined in on race day to help provide a kid-friendly entertainment.

Creating a fun, interactive and healthy foundation for Maui’s youth, HKRS works to inspire the next generation to value wellness, community and personal growth. Through physical activity and friendly competition, children not only stay active but also learn important life skills such as teamwork, perseverance and confidence.

More than just a race series, HKRS is meant to foster connection among kids, parents, volunteers and sponsors, all uniting for a shared mission: to build a stronger, healthier Maui through running.

“HKRS impacts more than 50,000 youth runners annually in 200-plus communities across the United States, and I’m excited that Maui is now one of those impacted communities,” said Kelsey Maldonado, the community coordinator for Maui HKRS.

“HKRS engages communities and families by providing an inclusive youth running experience, inspiring kids to believe in themselves and lead active healthy lifestyles,” Maldonado continued. “Our races are always kid focused with the ultimate goal of teaching children how to be active and healthy while creating meaningful relationships within our community.”

According to event organizers, any opportunity to get kids outside and engaged with the environment is a blessing, and there is no better time for these kids to step out and begin their first run than at a Healthy Kids Running Series Event.

“Kids who participate in physical activity have improved physical and mental health and are more likely to carry these healthy habits into adulthood,” Maldonado said.

Heading into this year’s races, HKRS is excited to bring the fun back to Maui for a third consecutive year.

With the goal of inspiring lasting healthy habits and joy in every participant, these events are meant to be celebrations of community, wellness and youth development.

“My hope for this event is that it will continue to grow and have a positive impact on the community,” Maldonado said. “I hope that these races will instill healthy habits and a joy for running. Registration for this season is still open. People can register online or we also have single day walk up registration as well.”

Everyone is welcome to join the fun. HKRS is already planning its next series of races, expected to take place this October.
