New law shifts seafood labeling rules
In an effort to protect local fishermen and consumers, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green on Friday signed House Bill 534 into law.
According to a joint news release from the Hawaii Longline Association, United Fishing Agency and Hawaii Seafood Council, the ahi country of origin labeling law adds transparency and protections to select seafood items.
The bill mandates retail establishments that sell products made with raw yellowfin tuna and bigeye tuna, such as poke and sashimi, must label them with the country of origin where the fish was caught.
Under existing federal law, retailers are required to label produce and seafood with the country of origin unless it’s processed into another form and if other ingredients are added. House Bill 534 is intended to provide additional information and quality control related to ahi purchases and consumption and sustainability.
