PALS Program joins Los Angeles Rams for Play 60 Event
More than 1,200 kids from across Maui County arrived at War Memorial Stadium for the Summer PALS program on Wednesday, as the county partnered with the Los Angeles Rams for their first Maui Mini Camp.
Andrew Whitworth, former LSU Tiger and NFL East-West Shrine Bowl Hall of Famer, kicked off the event with an exciting welcome.
With 13 rotational stations for the children to participate in, the Summer PALS program and the Rams organization incorporated fellowship with healthy and active living through the sport of football.
Making sure the day included something for everyone, they had stations for tackling, one vs. one, touchdown catch and celebration, defensive back drill, dance station, football free play, quarterback target, field goal challenge, route run, broad jump, 40 yard dash, face painting and friendship bracelets.
Organized by the NFL, PLAY 60 is a field day for children ages 5 to 12 that aims to get them to be physically active for at least 60 minutes each day. The camp on Maui was one of the three largest PLAY 60 events the NFL has hosted across the country so far.
The kids enjoyed a full day of football with many reflecting on the camp as a great day, and one of the biggest notable highlights was seeing the Rampage, who brought laughter and energy to every station he visited.
One of the PALS organizers noted how eager the children were from start to finish.
“They lit up when they saw the mascot Rampage coming around the corner, so they seemed pretty excited and pumped up to be here,” she said. “Maui County is very happy to be a part of this program. It was a long day but we have been having fun. The energy has constantly been high and (we) are again so grateful for this opportunity.”
