The Maui Police Department took three illegal firearms, including a fully automatic AK-47, off the street through the department’s gun buyback program on Saturday.

Altogether, Saturday’s event netted 45 handguns, 45 rifles, 36 shotguns and three illegal firearms, according to MPD. In addition to the AK-47, police also picked up an illegal sawed-off, short-barrel shotgun and a U.S. carbine with a sawed-off barrel.

Going into the program, the police department had offered gift cards to anyone who turned in firearms during a six-hour window Saturday at the Maui County Service Center, no questions asked and no identification required. Police gave the people who turned in firearms 122 gift cards worth a total of $12,200.

The buyback program is part of an effort by the department to reduce gun violence and accidental shootings by removing unwanted and potentially dangerous weapons from homes and streets.

Participants received a $100 gift card for handguns, rifles, shotguns, bump stocks and Glock switches and a $200 gift card for automatic firearms of any type, semi-automatic assault-type rifles and ghost guns.

Individuals could turn in an unlimited number of firearms but maxed out at three gift cards. Licensed firearms dealers and active or retired law enforcement personnel were not eligible to participate.

The department also distributed free gun locks.

“We are encouraged by the strong community response to this gun buyback program, and we sincerely thank everyone who participated,” Chief of Police John Pelletier said in a statement. “Every firearm turned in is one less opportunity for tragedy — and one more step toward a safer community.”

Starting at $4.62/week.
