‘The Voice’ star Jason Arcilla keeps busy on Maui

After Maui’s Jason Arcilla made fans across America with his memorable interpretation of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” on “The Voice” in 2023, he has continued entertaining audiences across the island at venues from Kapalua to Kula.

Often playing the island’s resorts, this very talented artist can draw from a vast repertoire of songs by Bob Marley, Bruno Mars and Coldplay to the Eagles, Sade and the Beatles.

Known for his unique blend of soul, reggae and island surf guitar, this Pukalani resident heads to Kapalua on Friday for a free performance at the Ritz-Carlton Maui’s Alaloa Lounge. Then it’s gigs at Wailea resorts and back Upcountry for an Ocean Vodka Farm show on June 12.

With a captivating musical style that could appeal internationally, Arcilla explained: “There’s reggae, of course, but it’s like a lot of soul, like soul reggae, and lo-fi pop. We are in the process of working on a new album and my creative director helping on this new album has been saying, ‘Your music just would reach somewhere else.’ Maybe we got to start reaching out to different places.”

When he auditioned on “The Voice,” the judges were blown away by his talent singing Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.” Gwen Stefani immediately grabbed him, declaring he was “so soft and tender and beautiful. This guy is unique sounding.”

Reba McEntire enthused: “You touched my heart,” and John Legend said he “loved the roundness in your tone. It was gorgeous.”

“Growing up, I listened to classic rock, and ‘Dreams’ was just one of those songs that I grew up listening to,” he said.

Plus, he has a connection to Fleetwood Mac as he used to play at Fleetwood’s on Front St. in Lahaina, and Mick Fleetwood sat in with him once on a Bob Marley song.

“I used to play there on the weekends on the rooftop, and of course ‘Dreams’ was just always in the quiver of songs,” he recalled. “There were so many times people would come up from downstairs and be like, ‘Where’s the band? Where was the woman that was singing?’ I was like, ‘That was no woman. That was me.’ When choosing that song (for “The Voice”), I just had a feeling they’re going to trip out, they’re going to think it’s a woman and that’s exactly what happened. Gwen turned around and was like, ‘I swear you are a woman.’ Even once the camera stopped rolling, she was, ‘Dude I seriously thought you were a woman. That was so cool. You have a very high range.'”

He also astonished one of the show’s vocal coaches. “I remember her messing with the scales on the piano and she’s like, ‘Follow me,’ and we’re getting really high on the keys and she takes off her glasses and double takes and looks at me and, ‘You know you’re hitting like Stevie Wonder notes. The notes you’re hitting are not normal.’ I just sing and I love to do it.”

Arriving on Maui as a baby from the Philippines, he remembers he started “singing to Mariah Carey. Toni Braxton, Sade, all these women influenced my sound, along with the Eagles, Seals and Crofts and Journey. Then I got into reggae and got to find out who Bob Marley was and how he influenced the islands.”

Beginning to learn ‘ukulele as a student at Lihikai Elementary School, he added guitar, bass, drums and piano to his repertoire and began playing most of the instruments on his recordings.

Aside from his solo gigs, Arcilla, with his group The Mad Steppas, gets a lot of convention and wedding work.

“That’s what keeps us busy and pays the bills,” he said. “A lot of the times when they’re playing it’s very jazz-influenced. Kind of like jazz fusion with reggae when we play together.”

In recent years, he has released a number of impressive EPs including “Cover Lover, Vol. 1,” with interpretations of Post Malone’s “White Iverson” and a light reggae version of Coldplay’s “Clocks.” His memorable original songs include the smooth soul of “Apple Pie” and the romantic ballad “Riverside Baby.”

With regard to his new album project, he said, “it’s going to be more soulful and less reggae,” but “at the end of the day, we’re still going to put some reggae in there because I am from Hawaii.”

Arcilla will perform from 6-9 p.m. June 6 at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua. He will also play the Fairmont Kea Lani from 5:30-8:30 p.m. June 7, the Lobby Lounge at the Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea from 8-10:30 p.m. June 10, the Lehua Lounge at the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort from 6-9 p.m. June 11, and Sunset at The Point at the Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery from 5:15-7:15 p.m. June 12.
