A 15-year-old boy was airlifted to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition on Thursday after falling from an ATV in Hana.

Maui police are investigating the accident that happened in a parking lot at 4111 Hana Highway at approximately 12:07 p.m. Thursday.

Based on their preliminary investigation, police reported that a 16-year-old boy from Hana was driving a Kawasaki Bayou 250 all-terrain vehicle in the parking area while carrying two additional passengers, both 15-year-old boys, from Hana.

Police said that while executing a right turn, one of the passengers who was seated on the rear cargo rack fell from the ATV onto the roadway.

The teen was taken to Hana Medical Clinic and then airlifted to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is still ongoing. Police said they do not believe excessive speed, alcohol or drug use were a contributing factor in the accident. At the time of the incident, none of the teens on the ATV were wearing helmets.
