Ho‘okumu Hou programs to help wildfire survivors stay in, rebuild or purchase homes

The Maui County Office of Recovery will host a series of community meetings July 30 and Aug. 1, leading up to the opening of the Hoʻokumu Hou housing programs, for which applications will be accepted starting Aug. 11.

According to the county, the newly named Hoʻokumu Hou will cover all of the county’s recovery programs. The Ho’okumu Hou housing programs are being funded through a federal Community Development Block Disaster Recovery grant and will focus on housing initiatives intended to help wildfire survivors stay in, purchase or return to their homes.

Hoʻokumu Hou programs are open to individuals and families who meet eligibility requirements that include income limits and loss of property during the 2023 Maui wildfires.

During the upcoming meetings, the county will offer information on the single-family homeowner reconstruction program, which provides assistance to reconstruct homes lost to the wildfires for eligible homeowners who have not yet started to rebuild.

Additionally, there is a single-family homeowner reimbursement program that provides up to $400,000 to eligible homeowners who have already rebuilt their homes that were destroyed in the wildfire.

A first-time homebuyer opportunity program also provides up to $600,000 for the purchase of a home to eligible residents who do not own a home.

An in-person informational meeting on the Hoʻokumu Hou programs will be from 5-8 p.m. July 30 at the Lahaina Civic Center Social Hall.

Additionally, three back-to-back community meetings will cover each of the housing programs, with one hour dedicated to each program. Each meeting will start with a presentation on the program, followed by a question-and-answer session and an opportunity for one-on-one discussions.

Residents are welcome to attend all three meetings or drop in for meetings of interest.

The online meetings will be from 3-6 p.m. Aug. 1.

The in-person meetings on July 30 will be livestreamed on Maui County’s Facebook page. No account is needed to view the event. A live broadcast of the meetings will also be shown on Akakū: Maui Community Media, Channel 53.
