Sporting a wide array of athletic offerings at a lot of different levels, the Maui Interscholastic League is calling on anyone who might be interested in officiating athletic contests for the upcoming school year.
An informational gathering for MIL officials will be from 10 a.m. to noon July 26 at the Maui High School library, and league leaders are welcoming anyone who might want to be a referee, umpire or official for the league’s more than 20 sports this upcoming school year.
MIL executive director Joseph Balangitao said candidates for officials could include former athletes, and even residents as young as high school age or someone who’s attending the University of Hawaii Maui College and wanting to earn some extra money.
Balangitao added that the league is also encouraging officials to consider refereeing more than one sport, and the league is willing to train new officials, with everything from Little League to Pop Warner games available.
At the high school level, the MIL offers cross country, volleyball, air riflery, bowling, cheerleading, football, soccer, canoe paddling, basketball, swimming and diving, wrestling, flag football, golf, surfing, track and field, tennis, judo, volleyball, water polo, softball and baseball. More than a dozen schools across Maui County compete in the league, and most sports include boys and girls teams.
During the upcoming informational meeting, the coordinators for officials who do the scheduling for the different sports will talk about their sport, exchange ideas and possibly get some crossover.
“We’ll bring anyone who’s interested in, pair them with a veteran official and get them going,” Balangitao said of potential new officials.
