The Central East Maui Little League All Stars advanced in the playoffs in the Little League Intermediate Division 50/70 Baseball World Series.

The Maui team defeated host team Danville, California Monday at Max Baer Park in Livermore, California.

The Maui team is scheduled to play against Louisiana Wednesday.

“It feels great to be here,” co-coach Kory Takamura said.

“We look forward to our next game.”

The Maui team won the west regional championship defeating Northern California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona in pool play.

The Maui team then won in bracket competition against Arizona, Nogales, and Southern California.

In the Monday game against Danville, pitchers Hayden Takahashi and Kaiehu Miller each pitched two innings, helping to keep the opposing team to two runs.

Kamalei Lyman Santos hit a 3-run homer in the second inning, breaking the game open for Maui.

The game was called with Maui winning after the fourth inning because of the 15-run rule.

Kory Takamura said in the game with Southern California ending in a 3-1 win on July 24, Maui pitcher Evan Tavares threw a total of six shutout innings.

“He has really good control of his pitches and commands the strike zone,” Takamura said.

“He has learned a lot from last year’s experiences and this past season with a deeper understanding of pitching.”

Besides Takamura, the other co-coach is Lester Nakama and the manager is Brendan Fuji.

Team members include Brextyn Hong, Cam Kaneshiro, Gabriel Laloulu, Kamalei Lyman-Santos, Kolten Magno, Eassie “Kaiehu” Miller, Kanon Nakama, Gauge Pacheco, Jet Pontes, Hayden Takahashi, Kellen Takamura, Evan Tavares and Matthew Yang.

The Maui team won the state championship, defeating Hilo.

In 2016, the Central East Maui Intermediate 50-70 Division was the world series champion, defeating U.S. and international teams.

The tournament this year includes games with various regional representatives, including Europe-Africa, Canada, and Mexico.
