Kruz, a blind, mixed breed dog desperately needs a home by Aug. 11.
Maui Humane Society officials said Kruz is rapidly declining in the shelter environment. If he is not adopted by that date, humane euthanasia will be the only remaining option, as his special needs can no longer be safely met in the shelter environment.
Kruz arrived at Maui Human Society in April with 20 other dogs from a home that could no longer give them the care they needed. Some dogs were in need of veterinary care and most were in need of developing social skills.
Despite his rough start, Kruz has shown himself to be a sweet, mellow companion who bonds with calm, patient people. Though blind, Kruz has navigated his world with resilience and curiosity, enjoying gentle affection, soft beds, and quiet company, according to Maui Humane Society. He has even made friends with other dogs in their care.
Shelter representatives said an ideal home for Kruz would be one with adults or mature family members, who keep to a steady, consistent routine to allow Kruz to settle. His advocates at the shelter believe he could be just as happy in a home with other dogs as he could being the only dog. Those interested in adopting Kruz, on or off island, can inquire by visiting mauihumanesociety.org/kruz.
Kruz was placed in a foster home to give him a break from the shelter. Since returning, his stress has intensified. He has started displaying signs of confusion and frustration, such as barking, flipping his water bowl and becoming hyperfocused on nearby dogs. His fixation due to frustration is resulting in handling becoming unsafe. For a blind senior, the constant noise and activity of the shelter has become too much to bear.
