The man charged with first-degree murder in the Aug. 15 shooting death of Maui Police Officer Suzanne O pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Maui Circuit Court.
In addition to the first-degree murder charge, Clembert Alii Kaneholani, 38, pleaded not guilty to first-degree attempted murder and carrying a firearm in commission of a separate felony, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a prohibited ammunition magazine.
Officer O was killed while responding to a call about an armed suspect who had reportedly fired multiple gunshots at the caretaker of the old Paia Sugar Mill on Baldwin Avenue.
Body camera footage shows officers searching a field outside the old mill when the suspect fires on the officers in an apparent ambush.
Officer O was shot in the chest. The bullet entered part of her body that was not covered by her protective vest.
Other officers returned fire and shot the suspect in the hip before taking him into police custody.
Judge Peter Cahill set Kaneholani’s trial for Feb 2. Kaneholani is being held without bail.
The courtroom was packed during Wednesday’s hearing with police officers as well as Officer O’s relatives and friends.
