MEMA lifts evacuation orders for Kaanapali fire

Update 2:40 p.m.: With the fire knocked down and highway reopening, Maui Emergency Management Agency has lifted evacuation orders and warnings for Kaanapali area zones. Both lanes of Honoapiʻilani Highway between Puʻukoliʻi Road and Lower Honoapiʻilani Highway (the lower road) reopened at 2:40 p.m., according to Maui police.

Update 2:15 p.m.: The Kaanapali fire mauka of Honoapi’ilani Highway near Kakaalaneo Drive is estimated at 90 acres. As of 2:08 p.m., the fire’s intensity has been significantly reduced and forward progress of the flames has been halted, but the fire is still smoldering and requires further containment efforts, according to the Maui Fire Department. Evacuation orders, warnings and advisories remain in effect.

At 1:20 p.m. Monday, Maui Emergency Management Agency issued evacuation orders, warnings and advisories for multiple zoned areas in Kaanapali due to smoke and their proximity to the Kaanapali fire.

The private road in Kaanapali Golf Estates and Old Stuart Road, also known as Cane Haul Road, have been opened for public use, according to a county news alert.

A portion of Honoapi’ilani Highway near the old Sugar Cane Train warehouse closed at 12:22 p.m.

Both lanes of Honoapiʻilani Highway between Puʻukoliʻi Road and Lower Honoapiʻilani Highway were closed to enable firefighting efforts. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

According to the emergency agency, no brush fire size estimates or other details are available at this time.
