An 18-year-old man from Makawao died Sunday when he reportedly lost his footing and fell while hiking off the Hana Highway.

Police have identified the teen as Robert Carvalho. He fell while hiking with acquaintances near mile marker 6 off the Hana Highway.

Police said that due to the location and height of the waterfall, which was estimated to be 120 feet, Carvalho needed to be extracted by personnel aboard the police department’s helicopter.

The preliminary investigation indicates no signs of foul play.

An autopsy has been scheduled.
