Teen suffers serious injuries in rollover wreck
A 18-year-old from Wailuku suffered critical injuries in a rollover wreck at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the Honoapiilani Highway in Kaanapali.
According to Maui police, the teen was driving a Toyota 4Runner north on the highway when the SUV drifted left over the solid white lane line and entered the left-turning lane for Kekaa Drive.
Police reported that the SUV hit several delineators, causing the driver to overcorrect to his right, toward the road’s shoulder embankment. The driver then overcorrected to the left in an effort to avoid the embankment and the SUV rolled multiple times before coming to rest on its passenger side.
The teenager was ejected from the vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
The front passenger, also an 18-year-old male from Wailuku, and the rear passenger, an 18-year-old male from Waihee both sustained minor injuries and were taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
Police said the preliminary investigation has shown the driver and rear passenger were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision, while the front passenger was wearing a seatbelt. The Toyota’s airbags did not deploy during the collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
