In an effort to preserve Maui’s coastline and unite the community for a cleaner coastline, volunteers including students, families, divers, community members and guests have gathered for the Lahaina Town Cleanup for more than 20 years.

The 21st annual cleanup will be 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 with registration at Lahaina Cannery. The effort area will cover Olowalu to Napili, including beach areas, as well as Lahainaluna Road and sections of the highway, with no admittance to closed recovery zones.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup and Mālama Maui Nui’s Get the Drift and Bag It! Campaign. Organizers are welcoming residents and visitors to join the effort to remove litter and debris from coastal environments.

“This cleanup is not only about protecting our coastline, but also about giving keiki the chance to learn the importance of environmental stewardship and service,” said Tambara Garrick, event organizer with the LahainaTown Action Committee. “It’s a great opportunity for youth to earn volunteer hours while seeing how their efforts make a real difference.”

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles, gloves, reef-safe sunscreen and aloha spirit. They will receive a Lahaina Town Cleanup T-shirt while supplies last, courtesy of Paradise Lahaina.

Cleanup supplies will be provided by Mālama Maui Nui.

Volunteers to gather on the mauka side of the parking lot at Lahaina Cannery near the Starbucks entrance for registration.

Waste Pro Hawaii will provide a dumpster for rubbish collected, and refreshments will be donated by Starbucks, Jersey Mike’s and Tropic Water. Music will be provided by DJ Ron throughout the morning.

Volunteers are also being encouraged to use the Clean Swell App to track debris collection during the cleanup. The collected data will be added to the International Coastal Cleanup’s Marine Debris Database.
