Community Cleanup in Kahului on Sept. 6
The Pilikahakai Foundation is inviting the Maui community to join its next beach cleanup from 8-9:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at the Kahului Boat Ramp parking lot.
The work day will focus on removing harmful microplastics from the shoreline to protect Maui’s coastal ecosystems.
The cleanup follows recent efforts at Kanaha Beach Park and Ukumehame Beach. Volunteers of all ages are welcome — students may also earn community service hours towards scholarship requirements.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle, reef-safe sunscreen and sun protection such as a hat or sunglasses. Cleanup supplies will be provided.
“Microplastics are a growing threat to Maui’s coastlines and marine life,” said Keolahou Hinau, executive director of Pilikahakai Foundation. “Community cleanups are a simple but powerful way we can protect our ocean today and ensure a healthier island for future generations.”
