Police arrest trio in hardware store break-in
Kula Hardware general manager Laci Taylor is pleased the trio who allegedly broke into her family’s store have been caught.
“It’s great,” Taylor said. “I’m glad it worked out the way it did.”
Taylor said it’s unfortunate there seems to be so many break-ins on Maui.
Maui police have arrested three people — Jordan K. Bibbs, 27; Kiilani K. Kalawe, 21; and Shayna Furtado-Estencion, 27 — and charged them in connection to the break-in and theft at Kula Hardware & Nursery. The allegations also include vandalism and firearms charges.
The alleged incident took place sometime around Aug. 12, when burglars broke in at night through a door to the store, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Camera footage reportedly shows three people with their faces covered dressed in white breaking into the store.
Bibbs was arrested at 1:53 a.m. Aug. 22 and initially held on $51,000 bail, according to police records.
The allegations included four firearm-related charges, one for carrying a 12-gauge shotgun in his vehicle on a public highway.
The complaint said Bibbs was in the process of being prosecuted in a separate felony case when he allegedly committed the burglary at the hardware store.
He was facing a second-degree theft charge for allegedly concealing and taking merchandise from Lowe’s on April 30.
