Portuguese Association of Maui offers bean soup, sweetbread fundraiser

The Portuguese Association of Maui will hold a bean soup and sweetbread fundraiser for its scholarship program Sept. 27 at Heritage Hall at 401 Baldwin Ave. in Paia.

The soup sells for $15 a quart and the sweetbread for $10 a loaf.

Orders for both soup and sweetbread are being accepted at Heritage Hall and over the phone at (808) 243-0065). Orders can be picked up at Heritage Hall between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The sweetbread recipe was created and donated by a graduate of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific to the Association who received a scholarship from the Portuguese Association in 2005.

The Portuguese Association became active in 2002 and began awarding scholarships for college-level studies in 2003. Since then, the association has given $78,500 to 73 Maui scholars.
