Baldwin defense tough in football team’s win over Kekaulike
The Baldwin Bears defeated King Kekaulike 28-16 on Saturday at King Kekaulike High School.
The defense held King Kekaulike’s rushing game to 3.7 yards a carry, and Kekaulike had no yardage in passing.
Absent from the players in the King Kekaulike lineup was junior quarterback Kingston Goliday, who had a higher than 42% completion rate in passing.
Baldwin lost to Kekaulike in a close 34-28 game on Sept. 5 but came back last weekend with a win.
On Saturday, Bears senior quarterback Jordan Carbonell passed for 142 yards and threw two touchdowns — one to senior Hiilawe Han and another to sophomore Ryan Coppa. Carbonell also rushed for 26 yards and a touchdown.
Bears junior Ka’ea’ea Kealoha ran for 53 yards during the game including a one-yard touchdown.
King Kekaulike senior Benjamin Raymondo Jr. kicked a 36-yard field goal to put Na Alii ahead 10-7 at the end of the second quarter.
But the Bears came roaring back with two touchdowns in the third quarter and scored again in the fourth quarter with a 28-yard pass from Carbonell to Hiilawe Han.
Kekaulike junior Wayne Kahula ran for 14 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter, and his teammate senior Colton Kehano ran for 21 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Bears’ coach Cody Nakamura said Kekaulike attempted only two passes and went to a heavy run offense in the absence of Goliday as quarterback.
Nakamura said the Bears’ win was a team effort, where everyone had to do their job. He added that the Bears’ next two games are both Division I matchups — one against Maui High and the other against Lahainaluna.
“It’s really important that every weekend we continue to get better,” he said.
Baldwin is scheduled to play against Maui High at Kekaulike Field on Saturday.
Lahainaluna defeats Maui High
The Lahainaluna Lunas defeated the Maui High Sabers 35-9 in Lahaina on Friday to win their second straight game.
Baldwin, which defeated Maui High and Lahainaluna earlier this year, is 2-0 in Division I competition in the Maui Interscholastic League, followed by the Lunas at 2-1.
The Lunas have defeated Maui High twice in league play and lost to Baldwin once. The Lunas are set to play against undefeated Kamehameha Maui on Friday, also in Lahaina.
Determining the champs of Division I in the Maui Interscholastic League could come down to the last game of the season when the Lunas meets Baldwin on Oct. 25 in Lahaina.
Baldwin defeated Lahainaluna, 42-12, during their last encounter on Sept. 20.
Kamehameha Maui, the statewide Division II champion in 2024, has won seven football games straight this year with its only defeat in a non-League game to Damien High School on Oahu, 33-17.
Molokai defeats Lanai
In 8-player football, Molokai High defeated the Lanai Pine Lads, 20-12, Saturday on Molokai. Molokai’s Tyson Tamanaha passed and rushed for touchdowns in the contest.
