Lahaina man killed crossing highway on bicycle
A 48-year-old man from Lahaina died Thursday after he was struck by a car while crossing the Honoapiilani Highway on a bicycle.
Authorities have not released the man’s name. The collision happened about 100 feet north of Fleming Road in Lahaina at about 5:46 a.m. Thursday.
According to police, a 52-year-old woman from Napili was driving a Honda CR-V north on the Highway in the left inner lane when she passed Fleming Road and collided with the bicyclist, who had turned left to cross the highway.
As a result of the collision, the man was thrown off the bike. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to police, the driver was not hurt and remained on scene.
The preliminary investigation has revealed the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, and speed is not considered a factor in the incident.
Traffic-related fatalities on Maui had slowed down since the beginning of this year.
Maui County had recorded 12 traffic-related deaths through the first six months of 2025, and the death of the bicyclist on Thursday was the county’s 13th of this year.
The county’s 12th traffic-related fatality happened when a 62-year-old man without a helmet was hit while driving a mo-ped May 28 in Kihei and died a few days later.
For comparison, the county had recorded 11 traffic-related fatalities in the same time frame last year.
