Man on e-bike succumbs to injuries after being hit by pickup
A 79-year-old man who was hit while riding an electric bike Wednesday in Kihei has died as a result of his injuries.
According to Maui police, Richard Holland of Kihei was riding an e-bike on Auhana Road when a 2024 Ford F-150 heading east on Kanai Road made a left turn toward the highway.
The pickup collided with Holland, who was thrown off the bike and suffered critical injuries. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. Holland died on Friday, according to police.
The driver of the Ford, a 40-year-old man from Kihei, remained on the scene and was not injured. Three juveniles inside the pickup were also not hurt in the collision.
Police reported that the driver was arrested on a first-degree negligent injury charge and taken to the Wailuku Police Station for booking and processing without incident. He was then released pending investigation.
Police said the preliminary investigation has shown Holland was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, and speed is not considered a factor.
Holland’s death marks Maui County’s 14th traffic-related fatality so far this year, compared to 13 at the same time last year, and the second bicyclist killed on Maui’s roads this month.
On Oct. 16, a 48-year-old man from Lahaina died after he was hit on a bicycle by a Honda CRV on the Honoapiilani Highway by Fleming Road in Lahaina.
The 48-year-old was turning left to cross Honoapiilani Highway in front of the Honda when he was hit.
