Maui youth Micah Diaz received a unanimous decision against his opponent Sergio Enriquez en route to taking first place in the intermediate division of the USA Boxing National Open on Sept. 13-20 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Diaz, 13, who is ranked No. 1 nationally in his 90-pound intermediate division, attends Lokelani Intermediate School in Kihei and is receiving boxing instruction from the Southside Boxing Club of Maui.

“It’s unreal,” said his father Michael, a coach at Southside Boxing. “It’s such an accomplishment for Micah.”

Michael Diaz said roughly 1,200 boxers competed in various weight divisions in Tulsa.

The victory was the third national event to take place in 2025, where points are accrued by boxers to determine their ranking in future USA Boxing competition, including matches scheduled by the USA Boxing National Championships on Dec. 6-13 in Lubbock, Texas.

Diaz won an earlier event on June 10-13 under USA Boxing National Junior & Youth Golden Gloves Tournament in East Ridge, Tennessee.

Micah has competed in five national tournaments, receiving three gold and one silver medal as he moved up in the amateur weight class from 80 pounds to 90 pounds.

Diaz said he was grateful for the help provided to his son by Southside Boxing, including head coach Nante Manangan and other assistants, including Kili Scott Madrid, Dale Fernandez, Jake Garcia and Rico Manangan.

Starting at $4.62/week.
