State calls for more testing after getting high bacteria count at Maui beach

State officials say more tests are needed after routine testing revealed a high bacteria count at Cove Park in Kihei.
According to the state Health Department, levels of 384 per 100 mL were detected during routine monitoring, and the department is uncertain about the representativeness of the first sample.
The department says the beach has historically met the acceptable threshold level, and there is no known source of fecal contamination.
As a result, the state is retesting the site, and the department says it will update the notification based on the results.
