Topping the charts in 17 countries, Britney Spears’ “Oops!… I Did It Again,” is among the songs featured in Seabury Hall Performing Arts’ production of the fun high-energy musical “Once Upon a One More Time,” which opens Nov. 14.

Based on the music performed and recorded by Spears and directed and choreographed by David Ward, the Broadway musical reinvents a bunch of iconic fairytale characters.

“It’s just been released for high schools only,” Ward explained. “The license is not available for community theater. It’s being done all over the country by high schools, and it’s kind of a perfect high school vehicle because the story, the music, everything about it just lends itself really well. It’s very pop and contemporary for the kids rather than your traditional musical theater score.”

When it opened on Broadway, reviews included Entertainment Weekly’s: “Once Upon a One More Time is a youthful, exuberant take on beloved tales that’s more dazzling and polished than Cinderella’s glass slipper.” The Washington Post praised it “meshes the pop star’s hits with lively and empowering fairy-tale retellings.” And ABC News called it “a big, modern, musical dance party, with Britney’s beating heart at its core.”

A tale of female empowerment, it follows a group of fairy tale heroines who experience a spiritual awakening, breaking out of their prescribed roles to change their destinies.

“It’s about fairy tale princesses and wanting to rewrite their narratives,” Ward continued. “They took Britney Spears’ music and rewrote some of the lyrics to propel the story forward, but they kept the essence of the songs intact.”

Authorized by Spears and inspired by Betty Friedan’s classic “The Feminine Mystique,” the cast features Kyra Sidon or Aurora Zoeteway as Cinderella, the controlling Narrator is Richard Hernandez, Snow White is played by Bella Hampe, the Sleeping Beauty by Elizabeth Jenkins, the Little Mermaid by Azmina Zainuddin, and Rapunzel by Sidon or Zoeteway).

When they question the roles, they’ve been forced to play and rebel against patriarchal attitudes, Cinderella’s stepmother, played by Nikki Kayes, attempts to sideline the heroines so her daughters, Belinda (Makaela Cooper) and Betany (Peyton Prouty), can win over Prince Charming (Coaster Vines).

A jubilant jukebox musical, it tells its story with 23 Spears hits, including “Womanizer,” “Gimme More,” “Crazy,” “Circus,” “If I’m Dancing,” “Lucky,” and “Toxic.” The Prince sings “Oops!… I Did It Again” when it’s revealed he’s made a mistake. The evil stepmother sings “Toxic” to try to destroy the princesses, and feeling betrayed by Prince Charming, they sing “Womanizer.”

“I’ve been doing musicals for many years, and the kids are so excited by the music,” said Ward. “The entire cast listened to Britney’s versions. So when they came in to learn the music, half our job was already done, even though the words and some of the arrangements changed.”

With a cast of 28, assisted by a stage crew of 10 students, Julia Golding is the show’s vocal director. Costume design is by Andre Morissette and Vanessa Cerrito, with sound design by Matthew Hardwick and Peter Della Croce. Sets and lighting are under the direction of Todd Van Amburgh.

“I adore this cast,” Ward said. “These kids are so enthusiastic and positive. They’re really putting their hearts and soul into it. It’s super exciting. I’ve been having a blast with it. It has so much material, and so many big dance numbers. It is super dance-heavy.”
