Police: Driver who fled scene of wreck is in custody

Police said Monday that the man wanted in connection with a fatal crash on the Haleakala Highway has been taken into custody without incident.

According to Maui police, 19-year-old Mason Pang died Thursday at Maui Memorial Medical Center from injuries he suffered in a head-on collision at about 12:14 a.m. Wednesday on Haleakala Highway.

Police previously said Pang was driving a 1998 Toyota Tacoma eastbound when the driver of a 2020 Honda Ridgeline made a left turn from Old Haleakala Highway onto Haleakala Highway and collided with the Tacoma.

Police said the driver of the Honda fled the scene on foot. He was identified as Kubo, and police had sought the public’s help in locating him.

A 32-year-old woman from Wailuku who was a passenger in the Honda suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said Pang was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while the passenger in the Honda was not. Air bags deployed in both vehicles.

The crash remains under investigation.

Maui County has recorded 18 traffic-related fatalities in 2025, four more than at the same time last year.
