Police seek man who allegedly fled scene of wreck

Maui police are looking for a 31-year-old man who they say fled the scene of a serious crash early Wednesday on Haleakala Highway in Pukalani.
Police identified the man as Kaleo Kubo, who is known to frequent Central Maui. He is wanted on an active no-bail warrant, and the Maui Police Department is asking for the public’s help in locating him.
The head-on collision left a 19-year-old Makawao man with life-threatening injuries. A 32-year-old woman from Wailuku also suffered multiple injuries.
According to police, a 2020 Honda Ridgeline executed a short left turn from the Old Haleakala Highway headed west onto the Haleakala Highway when the Honda collided head-on with a 1998 Toyota Tacoma going east.
The Toyota was being driven by the 19-year-old, who remained at Maui Memorial Medical Center with critical injuries on Wednesday. The 32-year-old woman was riding as a passenger in the Honda. She was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.
After the crash, the Honda’s driver fled on foot.
Police said the 19-year-old driver was wearing a seat belt. The Honda passenger was not. Air bags deployed in both vehicles.
Kubo is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall and 155 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
