Some of Maui’s talented singers have teamed to present “A Soulful Maui Holiday,” a blend of seasonal songs with a soulful twist, at the ProArts Playhouse Friday through Sunday. Aida Rose, Amber Seelig, Charles Cook, and Nara Boone will entertain with backing by bassist Ashton Yarbrough, saxophonist Alex Keeney, drummer Nolan Wren, and Vania Jerome on piano.
“This show is something that I’ve been wanting to do for many years here,” Cook explained. “I really love Christmas music in the style of Motown and R&B. We have a lot of really feel-good music in the show, and a lot of it is more up-tempo.”
All the artists have extensive stage credits, with Boone, Rose and Seelig previously teaming as The Urchins trio of singers providing commentary throughout the “Little Shop of Horrors” at ProArts, with Cook playing the voice of the Audrey II plant.
“The three ladies that I’m going to be performing with, I had a chance to perform with them in a ‘Little Shop,'” he noted. “The first time I heard these girls sing in one of our rehearsals, I immediately remember saying to Vania, who’s music directing for us, I want to perform with these ladies, and we can do this Christmas show because we have the voices.”
Among the songs in the show, the audience will hear “some traditional songs, just a little different style. We’re doing ‘Silver Bells’ in the style of John Legend, ‘Joy to the World,’ the Whitney Houston version, and ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ in the style of Pentatonix. We’ve got ‘Winter Wonderland’ from Earth, Wind and Fire.”
Before stepping on stage at ProArts on Friday, Cook previously starred as female impersonator Lola in the theater’s hit production of “Kinky Boots.”
“‘Kinky Boots’ was incredible,” he recalled. “I remember seeing Billy Porter in the role of Lola on Broadway in New York, and saying to myself, I would love to play that role on stage, and I hope I could do it as much justice as he did. When I had the opportunity to do that, I was absolutely thrilled. I loved every moment, and the cast was amazing.”
A veteran of Maui theater, Cook starred in local productions of “Chicago,” “Legally Blonde,” “Cats,” and “La Cage aux Folles,” and continued entertaining on the Mainland for nearly a decade before returning to our island.
Among his fellow show mates, Rose is a classically trained singer who recently played Transylvanian maid Magenta in “The Rocky Horror Show,” and was in “Come From Away.” Studying classical voice and learning to sing opera at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, she has taught music at the Maui Preparatory Academy and the Lahaina-based nonprofit Theatre Theatre Maui.
Seelig most recently starred as comedienne Margie O’Brien in Maui OnStage’s production of “A 1940s Radio Christmas Carol,” and as Janet Weiss in “The Rocky Horror Show” at the Historic Iao Theater. Her other stage roles have included TV reporter Janice Mosher in “Come From Away.”
The former lead vocalist with the acclaimed “‘Ulalena” show, Boone has recently enjoyed returning to musical theater. Besides “Little Shop,” she sang in the musical “Come From Away.” Balancing music and social activism, Boone is involved with the Maui Housing Hui and the Maui Grassroots Collective. She is also the Maui facilitator for Wisdom Circles Oceania, providing therapeutic art and music for fire survivors.
“I’m definitely excited about it,” said Boone about the ProArts concert. “The connections that the four of us, when we were doing ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ created such a feeling of camaraderie. There are lots of duets, and I’m looking forward to hearing Aida and Amber’s different songs as well. They both have beautiful voices. Amber is somebody I am so excited to watch grow. She already does things with her voice at such a young age that just blow me away. And Aida’s just an incredible powerhouse with this amazing range. So it’s really fun to be able to sing together.”
Delighted to finally be celebrating Christmas with a soulful show, Cook said, “I think people are really going to enjoy it. You’ve got some vocalists and band members who are really passionate about what we do. We love to share our gifts with the world. Bringing this type of Christmas concert to Maui is really special for us.”
“A Soulful Maui Holiday” is presented at the ProArts Playhouse on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $26 to $47.
