Elections office reminds potential candidates about key dates

The state Elections Office is reminding residents considering a run for office about upcoming deadlines.

On Feb. 2, individuals can begin the filing process to appear on the 2026 election ballot.

To qualify, candidates must obtain a nomination paper and collect signatures from registered voters in the district they seek to represent. More information is available on the Elections Office website.

More than 100 offices are up for election this year, including governor, lieutenant governor and Maui County mayor.

“We encourage candidates to file early to avoid last-minute issues and ensure a smooth process,” Chief Election Officer Scott Nago said. “Collecting more signatures than required can help prevent delays and make filing easier.”

The filing deadline is 4:30 p.m. June 2. The primary election will be Aug. 8, and the general election will be Nov. 3. Registered voters can expect to receive ballots by mail 18 days before each election.

For official election and voting information, including how to become a candidate and to check voter registration, go to elections.hawaii.gov or call 808-453‒VOTE (8683).

Starting at $4.62/week.
