Freshman House member Tyson K. Miyake of Maui has been picked to participate in a special regional training program for lawmakers serving their first four years of service.

Admission to the Western Legislative Academy in Colorado is competitive with only 52 out of more than 100 applicants selected to participate in the three and a half day intensive program focusing on subjects such as negotiation and conflict management.

Miyake, a Democrat representing Central Maui including Waiehu, Paukukalo, Wailuku, Wailuku Heights, and Waikapu, was appointed by Gov. Josh Green in December 2023, succeeding state Rep. Troy Hashimoto who was appointed to the state Senate.

Miyake served as chief of staff to former Maui Mayor Michael Victorino.
