MPD: Man wounded in shootout with police succumbs to injuries

Maui police said a man who fired a gun at officers and was shot when they returned fire Thursday night has died from his injuries.
According to the Maui Police Department, dispatch received a call at 7:27 p.m. Thursday reporting a possible terroristic threatening incident involving a man armed with a gun in an open field off Kuikahi Drive in Wailuku next to the Hele gas station.
Police said patrol officers responded to the area and located the man, who refused to comply with commands and opened fire on the officers. Police said officers then returned fire, striking the man.
Police said the man’s identity is not being released at this time, as they are working to notify his family of his death.
No other injuries were reported.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard procedure.
The incident remains under investigation.
