Open house offers chance to learn more about Maui’s new water conservation rules

The Maui County Department of Water Supply will host an open house from 5:30-7 p.m. Feb. 25 to discuss recent amendments to the county’s water conservation rules and what those changes mean to the community.

According to the county, the open house will be at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center, 395 Waena St., Wailuku. It will feature a brief presentation on the changes that will take effect March 1 before allowing attendees to visit with department staff and explore a variety of stations focused on different aspects of Maui’s water supply.

One of the stations will focus on where residents’ drinking water comes from and how it is treated, while others will explore upcoming projects and initiatives, and offer access to additional information and resources.

The Maui County Council amended the County Water Code in January, looking to address water waste, promote responsible water use and ensure a reliable supply. The county said the new rules are designed to prioritize essential needs, limit nonessential uses and give residents and businesses practical guidance to help them conserve water.

“The updated rules are part of our efforts to safeguard Maui’s water and support the community in wise water-usage practices,” said John Stufflebean, director of the department.

Free plants, water-saving fixtures and light refreshments will be available for those who attend the in-person event.

For anyone who is unable to attend in person, an online presentation will be offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 26 via Microsoft Teams at tinyurl.com/mrxses9e. The Meeting ID is 257 651 676 620 74. The passcode is jE3KQ2mf.

Community members can also tune in to KAOI (AM 1110) at 11 a.m. Feb. 18 to hear department staff discuss the rules.

Starting at $4.62/week.
