Police: Lahaina man dies from injuries after crash
A 59-year-old Lahaina man died Sunday from injuries sustained in a car crash a day earlier on the Honoapiilani Highway, police said.
According to Maui police, Thomas Lindsey of Lahaina was driving a 2025 Nissan Altima south on the highway when he rear-ended a 2023 Kia Soul being driven by an 82-year-old woman with an 83-year-old male passenger.
Police said the Nissan went into oncoming traffic following the collision and rolled onto its passenger’s side, blocking the northbound lanes.
Lindsey was found unconscious before being helped out of the vehicle. He was wearing a seatbelt, and the Nissan’s front airbags deployed.
Police said Lindsey reported that he didn’t have any injuries, but he was treated for a visible injury to his leg before refusing further medical care.
The 82-year-old woman and the 83-year-old man, both from New York, reported no injuries.
At approximately 3:20 a.m. Sunday, medical personnel responded to Lindsey’s home due to injuries believed to have been sustained in the collision. At 3:30 p.m., he succumbed to his injuries at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Investigators believe speed was a factor in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.
